Stainless Steel vs. Painted Steel Carton Erectors: When Is Washdown Necessary?
The choice between a stainless steel and a painted steel carton erector looks like a budget decision, but it is really a hygiene decision. Painted steel is cheaper and perfectly adequate in dry, general environments. Stainless steel costs more and exists for one reason: the environment is wet, corrosive, or subject to washdown. Buying the wrong one means either wasting money or watching a machine rust.

What Each Material Is For
Painted steel is carbon steel with a protective coating. It resists ordinary wear, holds up in dry warehouses, and keeps cost down. It is the right choice for most logistics, e-commerce, and general packaging lines.
Stainless steel — typically 304 or 316 — resists moisture, cleaning chemicals, and corrosion. It is specified for food, beverage, dairy, meat, seafood, and pharmaceutical environments where surfaces are hosed down or exposed to acids and salt.
When Washdown Is Truly Necessary
Washdown is required when product residue, moisture, or sanitizing chemicals come into regular contact with the machine. Common triggers:
- Daily water or foam cleaning of surrounding equipment.
- Wet, cold, or salty environments (seafood, meat, cold chain).
- Exposure to acidic products (citrus, vinegar-based foods).
- Regulatory requirements for food-contact hygiene.
If your plant wipes machines with a dry cloth and runs dry cardboard, painted steel is usually sufficient — and washdown-rated stainless is overkill you will pay for.
The Corrosion Trap to Avoid
Mixing materials is where many buyers stumble. A stainless frame with standard carbon-steel fasteners, brackets, or cable glands will still rust at those points. If you need washdown, specify stainless throughout — frame, guards, fasteners, and contact parts — or corrosion will find the one part that was not upgraded.
Decision Guide
| Environment | Recommended Material |
|---|---|
| Dry warehouse, general packaging | Painted steel |
| Food / beverage, occasional wipe-down | Stainless 304 |
| Meat, seafood, dairy, frequent washdown | Stainless 316 |
| Pharma cleanroom | Stainless 304/316 with documentation |

The Bottom Line
Ask one question first: will this machine ever get wet or chemically cleaned? If the answer is no, painted steel saves money with no performance loss. If the answer is yes — or could become yes — stainless steel is not an upgrade, it is a requirement. Match the material to the environment, and the machine will last as long as the rest of the line.
