Hot Melt Glue vs Tape for Carton Bottom Sealing Machine: ZRAY Cost & Strength Analysis (Up to 40 CPM) | ZRAY
Bottom sealing is the first thing your carton erector does after it forms the blank, and it decides a lot more than people think. Choose the wrong sealing method and you get popped bottoms in the warehouse, tape sticking to conveyor rollers, glue stringing across the machine frame, or rejected boxes at the checkweigher. This article compares hot melt glue sealing vs tape sealing on carton bottom sealing machines from the two angles that matter most to packaging engineers and plant buyers: cost per box and seal strength. We run an RSC (regular slotted container) in both configurations, use real consumable prices, and show you exactly when each method wins.
How Each Method Actually Works on a Bottom Sealer
Hot Melt Glue Sealing
A hot melt glue bottom sealer melts EVA or polyolefin adhesive pellets in a heated tank, typically at 150–170 °C, and pumps the liquid glue onto the minor flaps through nozzles. The erector then folds the major flaps, the glue line contacts the second panel, and the box moves through a compression section for 2–4 seconds while the bond sets.
Key numbers on our Single-Piece Case Erector:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Glue tank temperature | 150–170 °C (EVA) |
| Glue application | Nozzle, 2–4 glue lines per box |
| Open time of glue | 1–3 s before set |
| Compression section | Fixed-length, holds flaps until set |
| Cycle rate | Up to 40 CPM |
| Air pressure required | 0.5–0.7 MPa |
| Glue consumption (typical RSC, BC flute) | 0.8–1.2 g per box bottom |
The glue line is the only closure material. No film, no tape roll to change, no tape head to maintain. For a line running 500,000 boxes a year, that removes thousands of consumable changeovers.
Tape Sealing
A tape bottom sealer wraps BOPP or hot melt adhesive tape, usually 48–60 mm wide, across the bottom seam, overlapping each side by 25–50 mm. The tape head presses the tape down and a knife cuts it at a set length. Tape gives an immediate mechanical bond—there is no curing time, no temperature window.
Key numbers for tape configuration on the same machine:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Tape width | 48–60 mm |
| Tape overlap per side | 25–50 mm |
| Tape core diameter | 76 mm (3 inch) |
| Tape length per RSC bottom | 0.45–0.70 m per seam |
| Cycle rate | Up to 40 CPM |
| Air pressure required | 0.5–0.7 MPa |
| Tape head maintenance | Knife blade + pressure rollers, weekly check |
Cost per Box: Where the Real Money Goes
Let us price both methods on a medium-size RSC: L 400 × W 300 × H 300 mm, BC flute. These are today’s typical distributor prices, not OEM specials.
Hot Melt Glue Cost
- EVA hot melt adhesive: USD 1.8–2.4 per kg in bulk (pallets of 25 kg bags)
- Consumption per box bottom: 0.8–1.2 g → average 1.0 g
- Cost per box: USD 0.0018–0.0024
Tape Cost
- 48 mm BOPP tape, 65 micron, 100 m roll: USD 1.1–1.6 per roll
- Tape needed per box (bottom seam): 0.55–0.70 m including overlap
- Cost per box: USD 0.006–0.011
Yearly Comparison at 500,000 Boxes
| Item | Hot Melt Glue | Tape |
|---|---|---|
| Consumable cost per box | USD 0.002 | USD 0.008 |
| Consumable cost per year | USD 1,000 | USD 4,000 |
| Rolls of tape to buy/handle per year | 0 | 3,000–4,000 rolls |
| Glue bags (25 kg) per year | ~20 bags | 0 |
| Operator time for consumable change | Minimal | Several hours per week |
The glue route saves roughly USD 3,000 per year on consumables alone at half a million boxes. At 1 million boxes it is USD 6,000. That is one reason most food, beverage, and high-volume e-commerce lines run glue bottoms.
But the tape number hides two costs buyers forget:
- Tape roll handling. 3,000–4,000 rolls a year means inbound storage, staging at the machine, and disposal of cores. Nobody budgets that labor.
- Rejected tape seals. A cold-storage or dusty environment kills tape adhesion. Every popped tape seal is a lost box, a damaged product, and an insurance claim.

Strength Analysis: What the Bond Must Carry
“Strength” for a bottom seal is not tensile strength—it is dynamic load resistance during pick-up, palletizing, and transport.
Tape Strength Profile
- Immediate full strength. A correctly applied tape seal is load-capable within seconds.
- Peel strength: 10–16 N/cm at 90° for standard BOPP on kraft corrugated.
- Weak points: dust, grease, and moisture on the board surface; low temperature; worn tape heads that leave uneven pressure.
- Shocks well: tape absorbs impact by local peeling, rarely tears the board.
Hot Melt Strength Profile
- Requires 2–4 seconds of compression to reach handling strength.
- After set, the bond is board-fibre-tearing strong—the glue line is stronger than the corrugated board itself.
- Weak points: over-curing or burning the glue (shows as brown, brittle lines), under-temperature glue that skips, and very heavy contents that stress the seam during fork truck handling.
- Temperature-dependent: above 50 °C product temperature, EVA softens; use high-heat polyolefin adhesive instead.
Load Test Data (RSC 400 × 300 × 300, BC flute, 15 kg contents)
| Test | Tape Seal | Glue Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Drop test, 60 cm on corner | Pass, tape peeled 15 mm | Pass, glue intact |
| Fork truck bottom contact | Occasional tape cut, box still closed | Glue intact |
| Vertical compression 1,000 N | Box body fails first | Box body fails first |
| 24 h at 4 °C cold storage | Tape lifted on 3/10 samples | Glue intact |
In cold chain and rough handling, glue wins. In high-speed, immediate-stacking lines where boxes must be palletized instantly, tape gives you a shorter compression delay.
Board Specs That Decide the Outcome
Your corrugated board determines how both methods behave. We see field failures that are really board problems, not sealing problems.
- Single-wall B flute (2.5–3.0 mm, 200–350 gsm): fine for both. Tape likes flat surfaces; glue lines must stay inside the flap.
- Single-wall C flute (3.5–4.0 mm): tape can bridge the flute valley if flap edges are wavy. Glue nozzles must be adjusted to land on solid panel, not into the flute channel.
- Double-wall BC flute (6–7 mm, 350–500 gsm): stiff flaps mean tape heads need stronger pressure rollers; glue needs slightly more glue (1.0–1.2 g) and 3–4 s compression. This is the standard construction for hardware and auto parts master cartons.
- E flute (1.5–1.8 mm) and EB flute (4.5–5.5 mm): common for retail-ready and food boxes; tape is the faster fit for short runs, glue for long runs.
Rule of thumb we give customers: below 200,000 boxes/year and mixed sizes, tape is simpler to run. Above that, glue pays for the tank and nozzles within one year.
Environment: Where Tape Fails and Glue Works
We maintain lines in Russia, the EU, and CIS. The environment tells you which method to buy more than any spreadsheet does.
- Cold storage (0–4 °C, or −18 °C freezers): BOPP tape adhesive crystallizes; below 5 °C adhesion drops fast. Hot melt glue bonds better in cold, as long as the glue tank and nozzles are in a heated cabinet. We run glue bottoms in frozen food plants every season.
- High humidity (>80% RH summer): dust and moisture on board edges are the tape’s enemy. Glue lines are less sensitive to surface dust.
- High temperature (>35 °C warehouse): hot melt softens if the storage area is unventilated. Use high-heat polyolefin glue above 35 °C product ambient.

Machine Configurations at ZRAY
On ZRAY erectors you choose the bottom sealing module at order time. You do not have to live with one option forever—both modules are field-changeable on most frames.
- Glue module: heated tank, gear pump, 2–4 nozzles, compression section. Siemens-controlled temperature loop with low-temp alarm.
- Tape module: tape head with knife, press rollers, and a low-tape alarm that stops the machine before the box goes out unsealed.
Common alarm codes on both configurations:
| Alarm | Meaning | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Glue Temp Low | Tank below set point | Check heater contactor and thermocouple; wait for 150 °C |
| Air Pressure Low | Supply below 0.5 MPa | Check compressor, regulator, and leaks in the main line |
| Box Not Formed | Blank did not square up | Check suction cup height, vacuum, and magazine pusher timing |
| Tape Break / Out of Tape | Tape roll empty or snapped | Re-thread tape, check knife sharpness, set tape length again |
| Vacuum Low | Pick-up cup vacuum insufficient | Clean cups, check the vacuum generator, inspect hose joints |
Maintenance Plan for Either Module
| Interval | Glue Module | Tape Module |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Wipe nozzle plate; check tank level | Check tape tracking; blow dust off head |
| Weekly | Clean nozzles with purge; check hoses | Sharpen or replace knife; clean press rollers |
| Monthly | Drain and replace tank filter | Check brake tension; inspect tape path rollers |
| Quarterly | Calibrate temperature sensors; replace gun filters | Full head strip-down, replace springs and seals |
| Semi-annual | Flush tank with purge pellets; inspect pump wear | Replace knife assembly if dull; check alignment |
Our Recommendation
- Choose hot melt glue when: you run long, stable sizes; you process more than ~300,000 boxes a year; your warehouse is cold or dusty; you want the lowest per-box consumable cost.
- Choose tape when: you change box sizes constantly; you need zero warm-up time; you stack boxes onto pallets instantly after the machine; you run below ~200,000 boxes a year.
Most of our European and Russian customers land on glue bottoms for FMCG and e-commerce, and tape bottoms for mixed-size, short-run warehouses. Talk to our engineers with your box mix and annual volume, and we will size the module for you.
