Cold Chain Packaging: Reliable Box Erecting in Low-Temperature Environments
Box erecting in a cold chain is a different engineering problem than on a temperate floor. Low temperatures stiffen corrugated board, thicken adhesives, embrittle rubber components, and coat surfaces with condensation. A machine that forms cartons flawlessly at 20 °C can jam, mis-glue, and drop blanks at 2 °C. Reliable cold-chain erecting requires equipment — and materials — that are specified for the cold from the start.

How Cold Changes the Physics
- Stiffer board — cold corrugated resists folding and returns to shape, fighting square forming.
- Sluggish adhesive — hot-melt and tape lose tack as temperature drops.
- Brittle seals and cups — rubber suction cups and air lines harden and crack.
- Condensation — moisture forms on cold metal and board, weakening glue bonds.
Each effect alone is manageable; together they explain most cold-room packaging failures.
Specifying for the Cold
- Cold-rated pneumatics — cups, seals, and hoses made from low-temperature elastomers.
- Heated or cold-grade hot-melt — adhesive formulated to bond below 5 °C.
- Corrosion-resistant finishes — stainless or coated surfaces that shrug off condensation.
- Condensation-tolerant controls — sealed electronics and guarded sensors for humid air.
Board and Glue Are Part of the Machine
The erector is only half the system. Corrugated board that has been cold-stored is stiffer and damper; glue that is not cold-rated will fail no matter how well the machine runs. Test the complete system — board, adhesive, and machine — in the actual cold environment before commissioning.
Operating Practices That Help
- Let blanks acclimate gradually to reduce frost and warping.
- Run slightly longer compression time so adhesive sets in the cold.
- Inspect suction cups and air lines more frequently for cold-weather hardening.

Choosing the Right Machine
Ask the supplier directly: has this model been proven in refrigerated or frozen operations? Look for cold-rated components, documented low-temperature testing, and support for the board and adhesive grades your cold chain uses.
Reliable cold-chain box erecting is a systems problem. Get the machine, the board, and the adhesive all specified for the temperature — and the line will keep forming square, well-sealed cartons even when the thermometer says otherwise.
