Why Are Your Boxes Folding Squared-Out? Diagnosing Box Squaring Issues
A “squared-out” box is one whose corners are not square — it comes off the erector leaning, warped, or twisted, so it will not stack, will not seal, and looks defective to the customer. Squaring issues are frustrating because the machine appears to work while the output quietly fails. The cause is usually one of a small set of mechanical and material problems.

1. Warped or Damp Board
The most common culprit is the blank itself. Board that absorbed humidity or was stored unevenly folds with a memory of its warp. No machine can square a badly warped blank.
Check: Store blanks flat and dry, rotate stock, and test the same machine with fresh board.
2. Worn or Misaligned Folding Guides
Folding rods and guides drift over thousands of cycles. A guide out of position by a few millimeters folds a flap at the wrong angle, and the box emerges leaning.
Check: Re-verify guide positions against the manual and re-torque brackets after each size change.
3. Uneven Compression Pressure
If the final pressing station applies uneven force, one corner compresses more than the others. The box sets with a twist that the glue then locks in.
Check: Confirm the pressing plates are parallel and the pressure is balanced side to side.
4. Incorrect Glue Timing
Glue applied too early or too late lets the flaps shift before the bond sets. The box is “square” for a second, then relaxes into a parallelogram.
Check: Verify the glue pattern lands on the flaps, not beside them, and that compression time matches the adhesive’s open time.
5. Board Thickness Mismatch
Running 3-layer settings on 5-layer board — or vice versa — changes the fold geometry enough to throw corners out.
Check: Confirm the machine settings match the actual board thickness and flute.

A Systematic Diagnosis
- Test with fresh, dry board — if it squares, the problem is material.
- Check guide positions and torque.
- Check pressing plate parallelism and balance.
- Check glue timing and pattern.
- Confirm board thickness matches machine settings.
Work through these in order, and most squaring issues reveal themselves quickly. A squared box is not a bonus — it is the whole point of an erector. When corners go out, the cause is almost always in the board, the guides, the pressure, or the glue — and it is fixable.
