A strip of tape applied a few millimeters off-center is more than a cosmetic flaw. Misplaced tape leaves part of the bottom seam unsecured, weakens the carton under load, and can jam downstream equipment when a flap snags. Tape misplacement is one of the most common — and most preventable — defects on automatic case erecting lines.

Why Tape Lands in the Wrong Place

Tape misplacement almost always traces to one of four causes:

1. Carton drift — the box shifts or twists as it moves past the taping head.
2. Misaligned taping head — the head itself is out of position or angled.
3. Inconsistent box width — flaps of varying width change where the seam sits.
4. Worn tape guides or rollers — worn parts let the tape wander during application.

Fix 1: Stabilize the Carton

The carton must arrive at the taping head square and stay square. Check the infeed guides and side belts — if the box can drift even a few millimeters, the tape line will wander. Adjust guides so the box is held firmly without crushing, and verify the discharge side does not twist the box as it exits.

Fix 2: Align the Taping Head

The taping head must be centered on the seam and perpendicular to the box. Re-verify head alignment after any size change, and confirm the tape path through the head is straight with no twist in the roll.

Fix 3: Normalize Box Width

If flap width varies box to box, the seam wanders even when the head is perfect. This is often a folding problem upstream — out-of-square boxes. Fix the folding, and the tape placement corrects itself.

Fix 4: Maintain Guides and Rollers

Worn tape rollers and guides let tape wander. Inspect and replace them on a schedule, and clean adhesive residue that makes tape stick and pull off-line.

1. Observe whether the box drifts or twists at the taping station.
2. Check head centering and perpendicularity.
3. Verify box squareness upstream at the folder.
4. Inspect tape rollers and guides for wear and residue.
